I did this painting at the same time I did the “Diaspora” painting. This was when I was asked to do a diaspora exhibit for the Paarl Museum. It deals with South Africans dispersed widely all over the world.
The painting shows a young couple waiting for the train in the Stasie Hotel. Being barefoot indicates that they are leaving with only their bare essentials. The woman are the stronger of the two with both feet on the ground.
