At 22:30 on the 29th November 1942 the British cargo ship, Dunedin Star struck an obstacle and stranded along the Skeleton Coast of South West Africa. A total of 63 people were put to shore.

SAAF Lockheed Ventura aircraft were sent from Cape Town to drop supplies but were destroyed on impact. The Ventura of Cpt. Naude landed on a nearby salt pan. It was then discovered that the airplane was stuck.

On the 17th January 1943 the Ventura was recovered. Soon after take-off the plane developed engine trouble and crashed in shallow water. The crew of three survived but had to wait another two weeks to be rescued with the other survivors.
